SACRAMENTO – Occupy Sacramento says it will attempt to meet with CA Attorney General Kamala Harris Thursday to urge Harris to work with Gov. Brown to "place an immediate moratorium on foreclosures and evictions" in California. The meeting precedes a rally by a national group opposing foreclosures.

A short NEWS CONFERENCE will be held Thursday (1/19/12) at 11:30 a.m. in front of the CA Dept. of Justice (1300 I St.), before Occupy spokespeople will attempt to deliver a letter to Harris in person.

At 12 Noon, there will be a rally in front of the AG office by Move-On, a national organizing group opposing foreclosures, and applauding Harris for "supporting the 99% by standing firm for a thorough investigation of the possible criminal acts" in the loan industry, "and standing firm for a settlement fund which is large enough to compensate people who have been hurt. "

The letter to AG Harris by Occupy Sacramento says, in part:

"A foreclosure moratorium would be an effective way to prevent any more homeowners from losing their homes to foreclosure fraud. We urge you to work with Governor Brown to place an immediate moratorium on foreclosures and evictions. The foreclosure process has gotten out of control. It needs to be halted completely until the banks’ illegal practices can be fully investigated, and until strong regulations are enacted to give homeowners a fighting chance at keeping their homes. We are asking that you take additional steps immediately to further reduce the unfair suffering of these homeowners."

The letter notes that in 2011, in California, "more than 10,000 homes foreclosed each month on average...with indications the numbers could rise this year. (I)t is costing state and local government millions of dollars in lost revenues...less money for public safety, schools, infrastructure and public services. Every single Californian is affected by foreclosures."
